Textiles Inspiration: Angharad McLaren

Angharad McLaren is a Scottish textile designer. She weaves some awesome shapes and 3D patterns and uses really great colours. Angharad is a real outdoors girl and gets her Inspiration from her extensive travels and love of outdoor activities.

“As the yarns and materials I use are quite unusual, I sometimes have to experiment with a lot of different weave structures and techniques until I get the right effect. Weaving intrigues me as there are so many possibilities within a logical framework of structures and limitations- I like to push these boundaries and develop new techniques to get the effect I’m looking for, such as using a traditional technique with very modern yarns or combining hand craft techniques with industrial production.”

Angharad originally studied Textile Design at Glasgow School of Art where she received her First Class BA Honours by 2003. She then went on to study an MA at the Royal College of Art graduating in 2006. Angharad currently has a studio at the Briggait in Glasgow where she crates her contemporary and award winning textiles.

I just love how Angharad McLaren manages to make her work so interesting to look at and so wonderfully 3D, oh and all the bright colours, of course…

What do you think? Have you seen any other 3D textiles you can tell us about?
