Can it really already be the holiday season? It’s hard to believe 2012 is just around the corner, but let’s ignore the Christmas/Hanukkah décor in the malls and focus on one holiday at a time. For those readers gearing up to celebrate Thanksgiving later this month, why not incorporate at least one of these three ways to green-ify your Turkey Day?
Make an eco-friendly centerpiece. There are so many fantastic ideas out there but one of my favorites is creating a Twig Hurricane. Gather twigs from your yard and attach to a cylindrical vase using hot glue or ribbon. Place a candle within the vase to make a warm and inviting centerpiece that guests will certainly remember. Save the leftovers! I am often surprised at how many Thanksgiving gatherings result in a garbage full of wasted food. The best part of Thanksgiving dinner is the leftovers! Store any extra turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie in reusable containers for safekeeping. Make turkey casserole, sandwiches or to simple heat up the food for Thanksgiving #2 over the next week.
Buy local foods. Potatoes, yams and apples are all in-season during this month so head over to your farmers market for some fresh produce. We’re not asking you to completely re-invent your Thanksgiving holiday for the sake of the environment (although if you want to, please do!). Simply take one of these ideas, incorporate it into your holiday, whether it’s making an environmentally friendly centerpiece, saving and re-using leftovers or buying local foods.
