Chair Classics: Chair One Series by Konstantin Grcic

When it comes to industrial design, Konstantin Grcic knows what he’s doing — and it shows. This fact is perhaps no more clearly evident than in his Chair One series, designed for Magis in 2004. It truly is an industrial object in all senses of the word, with the angular basket-like seat being made of die cast aluminum and a plethora of equally robust base options for contract and residential uses. With Chair One, Grcic has designed a versatile system of seating, not unlike the Eamesmolded fibreglass shells and interchangeable bases designed for Herman Miller in the 50′s and 60′s. Options for the chair include a swivel base, stacking aluminum legs, a monolithic concrete base and a public seating system. Due to the overwhelming success of the chair(s), Magis commissioned Mr. Grcic to design a matching table, and equally impressive barstool. The series is available in red, white, and anthracite powder coating if you’re looking for a practical durable finish, but if you feel as though you’re life needs a little bling (and your wallet needs a little thinning out) Magis also makes a polished aluminum version.
