Textiles Inspiration: Mary Katrantzou, born 1983

Mary Katrantzou says she wants to push print design to its very limits, and I think she is in the process of doing so. The Greek born 28 year old first studied architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design but eventually transfered her studies to Central Saint Martins Fashion Textiles degree in London where she later got her masters degree. Her first solo show for autumn/winter 2008 came after a stint of working for Sophia Kokosalaki and freelancing for the likes of Bill Blass.

Katrantzou‘ prints play on trompe l’oeil, the images she uses are always of luxurious items or scenes. I would be interested to see if she will one day use themes or objects that are mundane or grotesque and make them things of beauty, I bet she could, she is incredibly imaginative.  I love the shapes and elegance the imagery gives to the shapes of the clothes. She even prints onto knitwear which is no easy task. I heard that she has a collection for Top Shop (oh Top Shop, how I miss you… meep). Can’t wait to see what she does next.
